Hattie Miles
Hattie Miles was the first woman photographer on the Bournemouth Daily Echo. She worked there for 24 years, but for the past twelve years has been a busy freelance.
Her knowledge and experience of Bournemouth is quite unique having, not only grown to love the town in the 38 years she has lived here, but also knowing through her work, many of the back-stories to events and incidents in the area. Her walkingtalks aim to share her enthusiasm of the area and to tell some of the history and hidden stories of this popular tourist destination.
Hattie was born on a farm near Canterbury and lived on the Kent coast until a lucky chance brought her and her husband, writer Jeremy Miles, to Bournemouth in 1986. Often working together Jeremy and Hattie write and photograph many features that are published in national and local magazines and newspapers. Articles have included interviews with politician and keen gardener Ken Livingstone, controversial actor, writer and director Steven Berkoff, 1964 Miss World Ann Sidney, Royal milliner Vivien Sheriff and TV presenter and charity champion Esther Rantzen, .

Yes, there will be pre-booked Christmas themed walkingtalks with a festive lunch from The Kitchen Poole Park at the end of November. Firm dates will be posted soon … there may also be a Westbourne Christmas walkingtalk, but that is still to be confirmed. I do hope you will join us … Hattie

Thank you for the information regarding your boxing day walks. I would if possible like to join your party on one of the walks. I am staying at Westcliffe The Bourne Hall Hotel and reading some of the reviews etc., feel I may need to get out as much as possible. There is a half day excursion booked by the holiday company for the 27th the time I have no details of at the moment.
We have a lovely morning here bright crisp and sunny perfect walking weather. I am in South Norfolk. Regards Josephine

I enjoyed your article in July’s Southbourne Eye, I didn’t know about the green man, though I must have walked past it many times. I enjoy writing about the local area on my website and have been intending to walk the length of Southbourne Grove and Seabourne Road photographing the new shops and eateries that have sprung up ( if it ever stops raining! ) ; good to have a reminder to look up and take note of the original buildings.

Hi Hattie…I was wondering if you knew of a walk that my daughter and I could do tomorrow? Ideally it would be with you! Have been looking on sites but yours seem fabulous and we unfortunately have a very small amount of time down here!🙄

I’m afraid I won’t be walking tomorrow … but you might like to try one of my self guided walks.

It’s a town centre walk and includes Mary Shelley’s grave, and the founder of Bournemouth Orchestra’s grave, WH Smith’s house, some nice Art Deco buildings and some interesting places in the Gervis Arcade. It starts and finishes outside the Hotter Shoe Shop in Old Christchurch Road takes you on a nice circular route with a good coffee/ice cream stop. Let me know what you think of it.
